Workshops

Creating Platinum & Palladium Prints

Platinum Printmaking Workshops are held twice each year, once in the fall and once in the winter. These workshops provide an opportunity to learn the skills required to make expressive platinum prints taught by a working professional in the field. Through intensive hands-on instruction, you will be able to learn and experience how to create platinum and palladium prints which capture the sense of presence felt at the time the negative is exposed. You will receive information based upon sound sensitometric principles along with invaluable inspiration by being able to make your negatives work for you the way you intended.

The Post Hotel in Lake Louise Alberta is the chosen outdoor venue for these workshops. Set in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, an atmosphere of excitement combined with knowledge and motivation comes from unique field trips, which form the basis for each day’s workshop instruction. Successive days and field trips serve to build upon each preceding session, with emphasis on exploring and refining concepts and ideas.

Platinum printmaking is a craft which needs to be practiced with the correct tools and procedures. This workshop provides direction on how to develop the skill sets necessary to become a competent platinum printer. In addition, each participant will also find that their dedication to the craft of fine print making, personal vision and confidence will lead to a new direction and sense of purpose in this field.

These workshops are deliberately kept small, as eight to ten people are the ideal size for this type of work, and this structure allows for an intimate atmosphere of sharing information and learning from other’s techniques while refining your own craft of printmaking. Directed outdoor sessions in uncommon settings will challenge all participants with exposure situations in almost all types of lighting, while portfolio reviews and informal discussions will build confidence in your own abilities in platinum print making and negative development.

Due to restrictions of COVID-19, this workshop has been rescheduled to fall 2021. Please check back here for further details in January 2021 for a revised workshop schedule.
