Creating Platinum and Palladium Prints
Workshops in platinum printing are held twice each year, once in the fall and once in the winter. These workshops provide an opportunity to learn the skills required to create expressive platinum prints from a working professional in the field. You will be able to experience through intensive hands-on instruction how to create platinum and palladium prints which capture the sense of presence felt at the time the negative was exposed. You will receive sound information based upon solid sensitometric data and you will discover new found inspiration from being able to make your negatives work for you the way you intended.
The platinum print is unexcelled for being able to create in the viewer a sense of presence, and modern visions supported by this historical process can produce some very compelling imagery. This intensive 3 day workshop plus one practical field day, introduces platinum/palladium printing techniques by building upon fundamental sensitometric principals as they relate to both film development and platinum/palladium contrast mixtures, including the new sodium chloroplatinate (NA2) contrast agent. Concepts of paper selection and preparation, mixture control and calibration, sensitometry, negative exposure and development, use of pyro as a developer, retouching, mounting and presentation are covered.
This workshop is limited to a maximum of ten participants with photographic sessions conducted at different destinations in the Rocky Mountains around Banff, Lake Louise, and the Icefields Parkway, incorporating and building upon the principles learned in each previous session. More details concerning this workshop can be found below.

The Fine Art of Platinum/Palladium Print Making
The winter workshop in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains is for those who have a passion for platinum print making, and want to be challenged and inspired to produce the best possible platinum work they are capable of.
Set in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, an atmosphere of excitement combined with knowledge and motivation comes from unique field trips which form the basis for putting into practice each day’s workshop instruction. Successive days and field trips serve to build upon each preceding session, with emphasis on exploring and refining concepts and ideas.
Platinum printing is a craft which needs to be practiced with the correct tools and procedures. This workshop provides direction on how to develop the skill sets necessary to become a competent platinum printer. In addition, each participant will also find that their dedication to the craft of fine print making, personal vision and confidence will lead to a new direction and sense of purpose in this field.
These workshops are kept small, with eight to ten people being the ideal size for this type of work, and this structure allows for an intimate atmosphere of sharing information and learning from other participant’s techniques while refining your own craft of printmaking. Directed outdoor sessions in uncommon settings will challenge all participants with exposure situations in almost all types of lighting, while portfolio reviews and informal discussions will build confidence in your own abilities in platinum print making and negative development.
